Betting at Czech Racecourses
Betting at the Czech racecourses is organized by Betino, which has a monopoly on horse racing betting in the Czech Republic. A mix of fixed-odds and totalisator bets is offered, all at the same window. Most Betino staff speak enough English to handle your bets. Betino offers a handout written in English explaining its services.
Betino offers fixed odds bets to win, each way, and for a place. It also offers the following totalisator bets:
- male poradi (duo) bets – first two, in the correct order,
- velke poradi (trifecta) bets – the first three, in correct order,
Please note a few things that may be unfamiliar:
- The minimum stake is normally 20 crowns, plus a 5% handling charge, for fixed odds bets, and 10 crowns, without a handling charge, for totalisator bets.
- Where odds are displayed as, for example, 3:1, you will be paid out 3 crowns for each crown staked, and not 4 crowns. That is, the quoted price INCLUDES the returned stake.
- If you make a bet of, for example, 100 crowns each way, this will normally be interpreted as 50 crowns to win plus 50 crowns for a place, not as 100 crowns to win plus 100 crowns for a place.
- For totalisator bets, give the number of the horse as written in the race card. When you bet with fixed odds, use the special betting number given in the race programme and displayed near the betting window. This consists of the race number and the number that the horse will carry in the race. The number carried by a horse is its draw number. The horse drawn no. 1 is on the inside.
- The totalisator system will accept reverse bets, i.e., two horses in either order, on the malé pořadí. In Czech, this is called reverse (or kombinace, pronounced "kombinatse"). For the velké pořadí, you can give three horses, and say kombinace, and this will give you those three horses in any order. The system can handle combinations of 4 or 5 horses. Combinations that include bankers cannot be handled.
- When you bet at fixed odds, a 5% handling charge is levied over and above your stake, i.e., if you make a 100 crown bet, you pay 105 crowns. For totalisator bets, all charges are levied at source. If you make a 10 crown bet, you pay 10 crowns.
Betino posts its odds on the internet on http://www.velka-chuchle.cz/betino/index.php, under “kurzove nabidky”.
Betting with so-called black bookmakers is illegal. That is, the bettor is breaking the law. So is the bookmaker. You certainly have no redress in a dispute.
